is it coincidence that the most pirated shows are the ones that most people want to watch? i'm thinking "yes"

it is possible that there is some positive effect that piracy has on sales - i haven't looked at any data or anything. but i think most of it is probably just that things get pirated more if there's higher demand for them.

I really doubt it's coincidence. Popular things are popular. They get lots of people wanting to buy them and lots of people wanting to pirate them. What a shock.

yeah, sorry, that's exactly what I meant, wrote my post in a dumb / bad way

NAYRT

I recall reading some evidence that piracy generally has a positive impact on sales. Basically most of these have concluded that people pirate as a way to view the material either when they can't otherwise (like OP), or as a way to "preview" something they will actually purchase if they enjoy it.

The studies were limited, though, with regards to distinguishing between indie vs. mainstream productions, but I would argue, anecdotally, that most pirates are more likely to pay for indie things than they are big commercial stuff.

This is definitely true for me. I won't buy shows or movies that I haven't seen or CDs that I haven't heard. I have a limited budget, so I want to make sure that everything I buy is something I know I enjoy. I'll download a few episodes or songs to see if I like it, and then if I do, I'll go ahead and buy it.

There are studies that seem to indicate that is the case.
