Re: bad roommates thread

Pretty sure I dodged a potentially bad roomate. I feel bad for her on one hand, but on the other there was really no way I could have or should have endangered myself for her sake.

I sort of met her online, through fandom, and one of her recent posts was that she needed a place to live. Coincidentally, one of my roomates was moving out at the end of the semester, so I sent her an ask to see if she still needed a place.

Turns out she did, but she didn't give me the whole picture. I slogged through the backlog of her posts, and found out that her mom was... kinda psycho. Like, assaulted this girl, kicked her out of the house, and then called back to demand she come back. This repeated several times, until the girl hit up some fandom friends, and crashed with them for a while.

This raised some red flags, but not too terribly. I'm pretty used to psychotic family members, as the majority of my extended family is batshit, but it doesn't mean that everyone is crazy. So I arranged to have a video chat with her. I tell her a few details about the renting agreement, give her sympathy about her tight situation.

We get to talking, and I ask her for more details re: her mother. Turns out her mother would find out where she lived, and badger her into moving back into the new house they moved into. But also that the mother had poisoned her previous pet, and was planning to kill her new cat.

What. The. Fuck. I was horrified, and this was pretty much when I was like "NOPE NOPE NOPE", but I kept talking to her, figuring that her situation was pretty serious, and maybe I should take one for the team and give her a place.

She tells me her current roormates are kicking her out because there was a falling out in an incredibly small sub sect of Homestuck fandom. I know fans can be crazy and douchey, and I felt bad for her. But then I remembered she also said: she didn't have a job, couldn't get a job no matter how hard she looked, and was not going to school. And they were kicking her out even though she was paying all of her part of the rent.

Yeah.. this. Kind of threw up a bunch of question marks. I figured there probably was more going on other than just a fandom pissy fit.

The sticking point was really her family. She let me know her brother was basically a sociopath, and her mother basically pyschotic. Finally, I asked her if her mother would come find this girl if she knew where she lived.

The girl didn't even hesitate when she said, "Yes." But assured me that there would be no paper trail, she was just going to flee her city. But if her mother did show up, it would be a situation, as she put it, "Where the cops would need to be called."

Oh my god. I mean, this is really bad, and I feel super bad for her, but there was really no way I could endanger my own living space by letting this kind of situation into my life. She obviously wasn't going to deal with the situation other than trying to avoid her family, and they sounded hostile and open to pursuing her.

I did ask her to let the police know the situation she is in with her family, and she sort of brushed it off and said, "Yeah, that's a possibility."

Good lord. I ended up turning her down for good the other day, though I still feel guilty I couldn't help her.

Unless the people she was staying with said "Yeah, totally, her mother showed up!" I'd say she was lying. Seems more like her mother kicked her out for being a lazy mooch and she uses the "Oh my god, but my mother killed my pets!" story to get people to take her in. She's most likely getting kicked out for living there rent free, eating their food, and not looking for work.

Yeah, if she can't help herself to the point where she won't call the police, there's not much you can do to help her.

If she was telling the truth about the pet-killing...people like that are sick.
