And I think that's what the OP is trying to say.

I don't mind fanfic in moderation, I like it, but... I like it with a nice balance. And I want fic that's almost analytical of the canon, not basically an AU that ignores the last book/season and has ships that would never happen. What ifs, missing moments, that sort of thing.

But... that's kind of harder to find nowadays. It's there, though, you've just gotta look for it. It's still at TWOP, but TWOP's incredibly unfriendly these days.

But... isn't an AU that ignores the last book/season a "what if" or I'm missing something?

Only if it's done a certain way. "AU because I didn't like the last book" or "I haven't seen the second half of the last season" isn't really what I mean. I mean, "what if we'd seen this conversation?" or "suppose John had told Mary beforehand?"

I don't agree.

The reasons behind a fic doesn't make it less of a What if, since it's still a "What would happen after this if [this] instead of [that].

in my experience, the reason for an AU being "I didn't like the last season" makes it a lot more likely to go left-field into OOCness rather than a "what if ______ had gone differently?"

It's totally possible that a person who goes "I didn't like the last season" could also go "I didn't like the last season because _______ happened, what if it had happened differently?" and think through what would be logical for the new route, but if the summary of the fic outright says "AU to ignore the last season" it's probably going to suck.
