There is no general reply to this. It really depends on the fandom. Some fandoms are on LJ, others are only on tumblr, others are on forums somewhere, some fandoms don't have active communities but only people who post fic without interacting with each other otherwise ... You'd probably get a better answer if you told us which fandoms you're looking for.
