I expect misconceptions about my political leanings. The GOP has been taken over by a bunch of right-wing nutjobs who call themselves the Tea Party when they should call themselves anarchists. I expect some misconceptions.

But assuming that just because I lean right means I want to throw everyone who isn't me under the bus is disgusting. If I had said:

"I'm a Democrat. Every now and then I think about leaving the party. Then some corporate bigwig says something entitled and I'm like...nope."

Would anon have spewed something about how I hate rich people and want to tax them out of existence and set up a Communist government?

well, not on here, because this places leans broadly left, but there's plenty of places where someone would have assumed something exactly like that

but it's not really an important point, all this proves is that people on both sides can act dumb, which is something we all know already

I know this place leans left. And the hypocrisy is irritating.

But we can agree that people on both sides can act stupid. I'll drink to that.

Well, it's not exactly a mirror situation (a Communist wouldn't be in the Democratic Party; even a socialist probably wouldn't be totally at home there - while someone who really did think the things that you were being accused of would, I think, feel fairly comfortable in the Republican Party) so I'm not sure if hypocrisy is precisely the word. But idiotic, yes, I would say that.

Also, in passing, I just wanted to say that I hope it doesn't come off like you're being dogpiled here & that I've enjoyed talking with you very much about this kind of thing even if we disagree. So thanks for that.

I've heard things like that said. And my uncle, who is a member of the Communist Party, is often accused of being a Democrat. It's no more true than me being some evil poor-hating, woman-abusing, gay-bashing, nut job.

And no, I don't feel dogpiled. :) I didn't really come to actually debate, but rather to get something off my chest that I don't feel comfortable sharing very often.

I'm not Republican, I imagine some of our views are probably quite differently, but given that this place does tend to lean left, I'm glad you said it.I just wish more Republicans would, rather than it being Tea Partiers.

The word 'entitled' doesn't have the same connotations for a Democrat it does a Republican so that's either a leading question or kind of a poor analogy?

The fact that the Tea Partiers were able to rise to power in your party's ranks speaks volumes to outsiders, especially when it hasn't solely been Tea Partiers making y'all look bad. So when you say you are a Republican, make no effort to dispel all the associations most people seem to have for that label nowadays, and then use the language of the worst of that party I can't say anon's attitude was out of the blue.

I used language that defined what irritates me about the other side of the political spectrum. I am not responsible for how someone else defines 'entitled.' Nor am I to blame if someone else jumps to conclusions. Anon needs to grow up and realize things aren't black and white before they start making assumptions about a stranger's political beliefs.

Okay. I'm just going to agree to disagree here. For me words tend to pick up cultural baggage and I think sometimes ignoring that is detrimental to the communication process but I'm not exactly going to get butthurt when someone wants to claim literal definitions are their only responsibility in communication.

eta: I'm sorry if I came across as blaming you. I wasn't trying to assign fault, just let you know that, like you just said, things aren't black and white so clarification doesn't hurt.
