I wouldn't say that's a tumblr only thing; it's pretty big in parts of video game fandom too.

I agree though. I think learning realism is a super important starting point in getting better and learning the basics, but experimenting and exaggeration are important once you have that step down.

I don't interact much in video game fandom but I don't doubt it, I mainly brought up tumblr because it's where I see this the most.

And yeah I definitely believe in having strong skills in figure drawing, but realism is not the only kind of art and I hate to see people supporting a movement that is actually very... limiting.

I understand a lot of this largely came from the comic book industry and video game industry being very sexist and the resulting female anatomy, but I don't think the solution is to force every artist to try to be a realist painter when that's just not what they do. I think it's better to ask them to draw female figures of different sizes, but in "their style."
