Oh I know. I love that kind of "see the precursors" stuff. But IMO ACD improved on Dupin so so so much. Holmes would never be so insufferably pompous as to spend four pages bullshitting pretentiously about how px = py and all that rot instead of simply explaining that he made a guess and then endeavored to verify it, or turning "then I thought, hey, what if the nail was already broken?" into a mind-bogglingly clever revelation.

Okay, maybe he would if he were writing the first detective story ever, but I still roll my eyes at Dupin.
