For that matter, Irene is British in Elementary, too. They reference her from New Jersey by having her have used a fake accent while wooing Sherlock, but when she starts acting like herself, she's back to speaking with a British accent.

Yeah, but if "Irene" had really been from New Jersey then you would have had an American Moriarty, so you'd be right back to the nationality switching.

I don't think you can say that the Irene of Elementary is British, as she's nothing but an invention of Moriarty. Unless Irene Adler was her real identity and I missed it, of course.

A recent episode had her writing Sherlock from prison using the name "Jamie Moriarty", so, yeah, you've got a point. Actually, if you think about it, the show has an American Irene and a British Moriarty in the same character... kinda brilliant, actually.

And this is why I came back for a second season. That and Joan is more of her own character than following/learning from Sherlock right now.
