Re: Things in fic that make you want to hit the back button

I've never seen fanfiction with original characters that wasn't awful. I should clarify: original main characters. Original characters created to move the plot along don't count.

Further clarifications: things like "I wrote my own Starfleet crew" isn't the same. I'm talking about people who create their own OC to interact with the main cast.

You're talking author self inserts?

Not necessarily--they're just often poorly conceived and written.

Imagine a sea of Bellas, each more Bella than the rest.

I guess I just never see these types of fics.

Ohhhhhhh...

Well ,that is more likely to be difficult, true.

Mostly , I'd say, because of the author of those tend to be written by young people who are anxious to 'get to the good part with mah OC" and they center it on their character. You can't be rushed and you have to accept that people are mainly in it for the canons. It sucks but ya gotta work with it rather than against it if you even want a CHANCE of the fic working out.

( I have seen an example of OCs that interacted with canon very well. The fic Ghosts in the Closet by Miyabou in DP fandom has two oCs that are paired with canons that aren't the focus and they mingled very well. It helped that a lot of the focus was on the canon protagonist and his issues and they were just supporting. Still they appeared to interact with the mains. One was the boyfriend of the protagonists' sister and the other was the boyfriend of someone they knew from school who worked with the canon protagonist' s dad.)

er though I suppose there's a difference between OCs CREATED TO interact with the main cast and those who just interact with the main cast. Right.

Eh. That still sounds like stuff I wouldn't be at all into, but it does sound considerably less annoying.

*shrug*

Fair enough

I understand that some people aren't into some stuff.

I'm just dropping in here to praise Ghosts in the Closet to high heavens. It's the fic that got me to watch the show and I still think it's the best in the fandom.
