If you hate one person from the couple, wouldn't you want to ship the person you *do* like with someone else? Is it that you hate them but you like their interactions/chemistry?

I don't get this. Unless you mean "hate" in a "love to hate, I find this person deliciously evil/intriguingly flawed" type of way...

sometimes there isn't any other viable option available.

i haven't been into a pairing like this in a while (thankfully, it's exhausting), but when i was a teenager, i was batshit for pacey (PURFECT PRINCE)/joey from dawnson's creek. i never hated joey, but i didn't really understand what the big deal was about her milkshake either. still, joshua jackon and katie holmes were selling me that sexual chemistry like penicillin during a syphilis outbreak. plus, i was in lub with pacey - omg soinlove - and i wanted him to have a) whatever he wanted and/or b) something the narrative said it was nice. the way i saw it, he gets joey (whom he wanted and loved so much HEARTS), he's the winner of the v. important triangle war!

it's terrible that my teenage mind saw joey as a prize, but them's the breaks.

Nah, sometimes it's about the chemistry, regardless of what I think of one half of them.

I can explain using Sherlock. There is really nobody else to ship John with that John will enjoy himself the most with. With Mycroft, it's that Mycroft is too much of a dick with a side of "he knows what he did". With Lestrade, there's the fact that Lestrade is still married (I think? I keep on losing the married/not married thread with him). Molly is a bit too weird and more of a friend for him to do anything with. So, there's really just Sherlock left.

There is a case to be made that John could be with Irene Adler, but she's kind of "dead" atm. And I think I'm one of the rare people who can see a ship with them. So, there you go. :)
