But the people who get called annoying or douchey most often are simply challenging people to think critically about accepted notions. I mean, atheists have been called annoying assholes for wanting "In God we trust" removed from their money, and yet it's completely valid to find fault with this, especially in a nation that so horribly fails at separation of church and state.

Too often, merely speaking up about something is considered annoying. This is kind of a type of silencing.

The people who get called annoying are not the people "challenging people to think critically about accepted notions", they're the people calling all religious people idiots and yelling at people who comfort mourning relatives by telling them their loved ones are in heaven.

That's not part of any political agenda.

"yelling at people who comfort mourning relatives by telling them their loved ones are in heaven."

To be fair, I can't imagine that this is a significant problem among atheists, if it's anything more than a false or I-saw-it-once anecdote.

But even so. Atheist isn't a group in the first place, so atheists can't, or rather shouldn't be able to, make other atheists look bad.

and yet, we are human beings on earth, and so as unfair as it is, when someone acts like a dick while identifying them clearly and loudly as a member of a group, and when people keep doing that while identifying themselves clearly and loudly as members of the same group, people will begin to associate the behavior with the group

just to be clear here: do you basically agree with me that there is a certain subset of atheists who act like dicks - and who don't just act like dicks, but who do so in very similar ways and from very similar intellectual positions? I'm trying to get a sense of what you're arguing for here.

Except I've seen tons and tons of atheists get called annoying for just discussing things. It happens ALL the time.

Exactly how often do you see people yell at others for comforting with the idea of heaven? I've been around plenty of atheists, as most people where I come from are atheist, and never once have I seen or heard of that happening. However I have seen people find it irritating when someone tells them they'll pray for them, but that's entirely different.

most people have the social graces not to say it even if they think it, because even if they're dicks they're not total morons, but i don't think the basic line of thought is all that rare

NA

So now you're calling people dicks on the basis of what you assume they think, rather than what they actually say or do. Brilliant.
