to be fair there was a lot of dubbed anime in the 90s/early 2000s that tried to make it seem like the characters were from the US (see rice balls = jelly doughnuts) so it makes sense that the kids watching it and writing fanfic would base it on what they thought the setting was. Plus their teachers probably told them to write what they know.

SA, sorry I meant to add that I was a different anon.

Yeah, I don't mind the anime fics that are using the dub characters in the dub "American" setting celebrating things like the 4th of July.
