I agree about Ivy, but you really think the fourth series has been fantastic? Not criticizing, just wondering. I've found it fairly bland, except when it's exceptionally ridiculous-- like the Anna storyline. I'm all for compelling stories, but there's something to be said for not needlessly torturing your characters. Haven't Anna and Bates been through enough?

Overall, series four has been my least favorite to date. Rose's storyline is stupid, Edith's is half-assed (poor Edith is always so under-utilized), and we've reverted back to Series One "Who is Mary's suitor going to be?" dynamics. And all of the presented suitors are dull (though I did fangirl a little at Blake-- because OMG it's ANDREW from Foyle's War!)-- Mary has little chemistry with most of them; I actually find her interactions with Tom most interesting, but can't even bring myself to ship it because they're never going to go there.

TL:DR: Anon has Downton Abbey feels.

If I were to rank the series, series 2 and 4 would be jostling for the top. Then series 1 and then series 3.

Like idk how to explain it.

Mary is my favorite character and I think that her stuff this series has been really interesting, examining her grieving process and seeing how she is slowly moving on from Matthew. But most of all, I LOOOOVE seeing her being so involved in the running of the estate. That is pretty much everything I've ever wanted for her as a character. Personally I don't see the chemistry with Mary and Gillingham, but I know people who do. But I DO see a lot of chemistry with Mary and Blake. Mary seems a lot freer around him, but at the same time she's fighting any attraction she might be feeling.

And I'm LOOOOVING Rose. She's fun and charming. I enjoy seeing her on screen and I think she has great chemistry with Jack Ross.

Edith's storyline was boring until this most recent episode, but I am finding it interesting to see Edith trying to figure out what to do because as a pregnant unmarried woman in the 1920s, her options are very limited.

Anna's storyline has too much emphasis on Bates for my liking (I HATE how she's being forced to think about "what will my crazy husband do if he finds out about Green?"). BUT I also think that the show is doing a good job of dealing with feelings of guilt, responsibility and shame and all those kinds of things that a woman who has been violated like that might feel.

I do agree about Mary running the estate-- I have loved her involvement in things.

Edith's storyline isn't boring, it just feels like an afterthought to me-- I wish they'd do a bit more with her character.

I'm still not sure I agree about the series as a whole, but I appreciate you expounding on your perspective-- it's interesting to engage in intelligent conversation with somebody, and not have them get defensive about their opinion. Good times!

I think it's funny you thought the show wouldn't go there with Tom and Mary because I thought FOR SURE it would.

I'm behind an episode, but I agree with you on poor Edith.

Honestly, I'm just jonesing for more Thomas. He's so slimy and conniving and manipulative, but not that good at it, and he's my absolute favorite.

I totally think they're going to go there. My bet is on 6th season.

You think so? Well, if you guys seem convinced, perhaps I'll let myself fangirl a bit and ship Tom/Mary! I certainly love me some Tom.

So with you on Tom, it makes sense but it's so obviously not going to happen. Gah. GAH, I SAY.

Spoilers, obviously.

I thought it was pretty obvious: Mary bitches at the new guy, he must be the future love interest. So far, the people she's bitched at the most always were.

The Anna situation is weird. I think it was a pretty jarring thing, and not in a good way. I hate rape as a plot device, and I especially hate that Anna's rape only really affects Bates and his storyline, not actually her's. It's always about Bates. Gah, my most hated character on the show.

I'm so annoyed about Thomas as well. It seems like every time he gets a little character development in a season, or episode, it gets immediately retconned in the next. And he really gets more and more stupid with each passing season, it's amazing. I want to like him so much, but I hate it when characters are being idiots and completely incapable of learning from their mistakes.
I also wish the writers would stop making him the butt-of-the-joke complete moron they love writing him as and make him rediscover at least the tiniest sense of honour and actually help out in he Anna-Bates situation in the end - if only to be able to say "we're even now" to Bates for the whole O'Brien affair.

I also really wish they would stop forgetting about the children all the time. It's almost like the writers always forget they exist, then they notive and throw them in for a second and then go back to forgetting them. The whole "evil nanny" thing in the first episode was also such a waste - that was an interesting situation that could have gone on for a much longer time. Would have been more interesting than Thomas bullying the new ladiesmaid into spying for him.

But ah, well, I'm mostly glad that Maggie Smith survived the last episode. I didn't think they'd let her die so soon, but the preview had me a bit worried nonetheless. I would probably stop watching if she was gone.
