Never joke with the guys who interrogate you in the airport when you arrive :/

This annoys me SO MUCH as an American. How humorless and bureaucratic and lengthy all the security around flying and traveling is. I don't even know why it bothers me as much as it does, but it really does bother me.

Personally, I would find jokey security people very offputting. They're there to do a serious job that requires a serious demeanor (and deserves serious respect, even if it is an inconvenience).

I actually really appreciate security officers, both in customs and elsewhere, who continue to come across as PEOPLE while also clearly being very attentive to their jobs. Actually reading and using my name as they carefully check my ID? Or chatting about how my trip abroad went, that's awesome, welcome home? Those feel like nice little touches that bring friendliness into the encounter and might just be a technique for engaging me in a few seconds of conversation to gauge MY demeanor, for all I know. It puts me at ease in a situation that has gotten more and more stressful for both sides over the years.
