It's easy to forget sometimes that there's, like, an entire fifth or so of the country where basically no one lives. Like, seriously, the whole area from the central Great Plains all the way until you hit the Pacific coastal regions - Nebraska, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, eastern Washington and Oregon, some of western Kansas - it's a massive area with a really low population. Even if you get down into Utah and Colorado - the only big cities in the whole region are there (Denver and SLC) and it's still pretty spread out.
