Ooh yeah, minimalist people with specific tastes can be difficult. IDK if a gift to a charity on her behalf is something you'd be interested in but you might look into donating to a sanctuary for ex-racehorses or dogs or something?

I bought this book (mostly based on this review) for a wine/mystery book enthusiast relative and it was a big hit. Never actually read it myself and I know tastes vary.

Gardening has been a goldmine interest for gifting but usually people have a specific taste and style when it comes to gardening and what kind of plants they like(e.g. some people love indoor plants, some people hate them. My mom loves succulents, herbs, and terrariums and is very, very picky when it comes to flowers). You might try poking around the plant sections of pinterest and etsy, that's where I got the idea to by my mom some of those tiny live plant terrarium necklaces and air plants for last mother's day.

I am not a big fan of practical gifts. Gifts should be something whimsical and indulgent the receiver would never or isn't able to treat themselves to. I once spent the better part of a year combing yard sales and auctions to put together the perfect romantically vintage vanity table for my grandmother after she got a fond look in her eyes recalling how she would get up early to watch her mother sit at hers every morning. But unfortunately some people are like my grandfather and the most playful thing they will enjoy receiving is some sentimental engraving on a high quality version of something they use every day. Party poopers.

Aww, but what if a high-quality version of something everyday is</ i> a pleasurable indulgence? Plus, if it gets daily use, it means that person is reminded of you a little every time :)

(I've gotten practical but upgraded gifts I never would have gotten myself that made some common tasks just flow noticeably better or quicker or easier; on the flip-side, I've gotten off-beat gifts that don't really fit any peculiarities of my own -- but I agree it's a rush to give and get unexpected things that end up matching up well!)

I agree with this, for what it's worth. Making a daily task pleasanter and easier can feel like an indulgence. Especially replacing ugly, inefficient equipment with handsome, well-designed things that really work.
