That's an interesting point. What I think it comes down to is that Dany has the most typical fantasy heroine storyline. By which I don't intend to instigate any Mary Sue arguments, just that she ticks way more "generic fantasy" boxes what with the sole surviving royal heir stuff, and that she experiences fantasy elements (dragons, prophecies, illusions, curses, etc.) on a daily basis.

When a lot people go into a fantasy series of any kind, they're probably expecting to meet a character with an arc more like Dany's and less like Sansa's, for example. It's not a measure of quality or anything; it's not wrong to like her for those very reasons. A character like Dany is interesting to see the specific way those familiar elements get used and resolved. A character like Sansa is interesting to me because I find her unfamiliar and refreshing, so her character development quite fascinating.
