We had completely different reactions to the books. I think she has undergone a tremendous degree of character growth. :( She loses a child and a husband she has grown to love despite the lack of control she has in marrying Drogo; she is betrayed by those she would love, those she trusts, those she saves. She has to learn the hard way that goodness is not always rewarded, that even decisions which seem morally right are often accompanied by terrible unforeseen consequences, and that getting what she wants and truly being a good leader may be mutually exclusive.

It puzzles me that you see her story arc as so charmed.
