Huh. Interesting. You don't have that reaction to characters you see in the source material first?

OP

Absolutely not. Worse, I suspect that I'd like the characters in question very much if I saw them in their respective original works. Go figure.

[though I'm not very sure about, say, the SGA characters - Sheppard and McKay in particular.]

If fanfic-sans-canon ruins characters for you then maybe you should stop doing it?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought about doing that, but it seems to me that I'm not missing out on much. Like, sure, I will probably never watch any Stargate or read any of Les Miserables, but there are plenty of other TV shows and other classic books I have not yet approached. One Victor Hugo makes no difference to my scope of reading (especially since I generally fail to find him terribly exciting).

That sounds pretty intense. Maybe you should stop?

Literally? LITERALLY repelled?

i don't know about you but sometimes reading dumb awful fanfiction makes me shake in so much anger that my chair rolls across the room

I think I have a similar but less extreme reaction. I read a lot of AU Inception fics because they tend to read like original stories, but certain other fandoms just make me wonder if the characters are really as immature and stupid as fics make them sound, and why anyone wants to write about paper-thin characters.

You should probably stick to fandoms you would never have any interest for the source material then.

Also did you just go with reading the most popular pairing or did your browse through a couple different ones? Because in my experience the most popular pairing always gets the most OOC fanfiction.

That doesn't seem like the best of ideas, OP.

What if you ended missing on some great source material because of someone who wrote a shitty fic about it?
