I interpret his character as clinically insane, but with a bit of faking it and hamming it up because he can and because it irritates BA.

It's definitely unclear, but I think if we are talking showverse, Murdock acts insane at some points even at a detriment to the team. He's a very valuable team member not because he's a wild card, but because he's a good pilot, mechanic and a conman, so jeopardizing missions by faking insanity in a place where he doesn't need to doesn't read truly sane to me.
