Just adopt them out, if you're so concerned. Most people who are playing now will probably take care of them. But if you don't that'll work out too, because at the end of the day they're just bits of data that don't actually have feelings.

I haven't thought about my neopets in years. All I remember is that my username was the same as my password.

I forgot the password to my first account a long time ago and it's since been deleted. I've had others since, but I still miss that first pet. a red Shoyru, back before the redesign, when Shoyrus were still cute.

After another neopet-related secret some time ago, I actually logged into my old account after over 5 years. I'm now sometimes playing games again, there were a few that were quite cute, and I stuck my four Eyries into the lodge for the whole time because I had a bad conscience that they were starving.

And I noticed my lab-ray account has apparently been deleted because I never went there anymore, oh well XD

I also feel weirdly guilty about Neopets. I adopted every pet on all my accounts (except for the first ones, of course) because apparently the thought of a 2D digital pet languishing in the pound upsets me. Wtf?

I get that.
Occasionally, I look through the Neopets tag on Tumblr, and I see a lot of people talking about "trading pets" and making NP off it. My mind boggles at that every time; I could never imagine giving up my pets.
(Yeah, I have way too many feelings about this. WTF, self.)
