I think there was a lawsuit that ruled it was illegal for them to ask for it.

no it is not.

but if you tell them that in the interview, you aren't getting the job, and by the time you take anyone to court (which lets be real, you probs won't) it's all kind of a moot point.

(My HR mother has sucked all workplace optimism out of me)
