Human attraction is fun!
You can be attracted to someone because of your personal fantasy about them (a celebrity, a stranger, a fictional character, the cute person in school you've never actually talked to)
You can be attracted to someone because they fit a certain criteria that hits your subconscious in a sex-time way. (They're blonde, they're tall, they're chubby, they're wearing a certain outfit, their voice is pitched right, they're very kind, they're very enthusiastic)
You can be attracted to someone purely because of chemicals. (You don't like them very much, you don't find them physically attractive, but you want to turn out the lights and go nuts anyway)

And all three in combination! And they can change over time! And even this is probably a serious simplification of all the ways people can react.
