Once I tried to change a homophobic friend's mind. It was a miserable failure. Two years later she came out as a lesbian.

Trying to convert people's opinions is a loser's game. Either she'll come around on her own or you're wasting your time. If the pros of being her friend outweigh her homophobia, then just be her friend. If not, end the friendship politely but make sure she knows why you're doing it.

This, a million times. I never try to change people, I just try to be their friend and once they realize that I'm a regular person they'll start to accept that gay people are okay (and sometimes this can happen really suddenly, it's kind of amazing).

I like that your story has a happy ending.

Honestly it doesn't really... she comes from a very conservative Catholic family and can't tell her parents or they'll try to "cure" her with therapy.

That's the other thing about homophobic people... a lot of the time it's not that they're just dicks, there's a lot more complicated shit going on than can be cured by having a friend get you into fandom or something.
