seeing how the OP mentions a "BNF" (often not positive) "huge literary snob" (def. not positively formulated) and "ranted", i'd assume the "her" was the BNF. a sort of "yeah, like you can talk". else there'd be no reason to mention the person bitching about Novik was a BNF, she would just be mentioned as "someone I know" or "someone on my F-list" or the like. that's how I read it, at any rate.

I like the worldbuilding in Novik's world a great deal more than I like the fact that none of her novels have endings, they just have HAHAHA YOU THOUGHT FOR ONCE THEY'D GET TO HAVE GOOD THINGS well nope stay tuned for the next book! It feels like one huge, rambling plot in several volumes that are cut up by locations, instead of a series of distinct novels.

I still like the books a ton, mind, but that and the crushing despair shoveled onto Laurence in order to find his breaking point... no a WORSE breaking point... this wasn't bad enough!!! make me kind of wonder if he's finally going to bounce back. Latest book sort of hints that way, but.

Hmm. I just read the first one and was going to look into the others, but maybe I should reconsider. :-(

there are a lot of things to enjoy in the books, and that you didn't find the writing style bothersome and presumably enjoyed the characters means you'll likely like the rest! also if you're starting now you have a lot of books to marathon. it especially bothered me because i read them all as they were coming out, possibly being able to get to the next one relatively quickly would make this issue way less noticeable.

or maybe just pause a chapter or two before the end to enjoy the feeling that they're probably going to be okay XDD ok just kidding.

But anyway if you liked the first it's quite likely you'd enjoy the rest. At least the first three idk it's been a little while since my last re-read. if by book two or three you're starting to not enjoy yourself anymore then i wouldn't try to force through because they're pretty representative of the whole series.

The first book is an intriguing introduction to the world. The second book explains some thing about the main dragon. The third book...

If you're reading and waiting for them to get back to the war instead of travelling and stuff on boats, you're barking up the wrong tree.

I'm not familiar with this author, so I'm a bit confused. Is she active in her *own* fandom, or in somebody else's?

I believe she's written a few shorts about her books, but I can't remember exactly, as it's been a while since I read them (her books and her fics). I know she's active in Person of Interest fandom now.
