Re: Fanon or canon?
I'll be damned if I have any idea what's canon in this fandom anymore.
Re: Fanon or canon? "Pacific Rim" spoilers
You wouldn't happen to have a URL for these fanworks would you? They actually sound really interesting. (-:
Re: Fanon or canon? "Pacific Rim" spoilers
All the Pacific Rim works of feriowind (fanart+fancomics, almost no fanfiction, though there might be some inspired by their ideas):
http://archiveofourown.org/users/feriowind/pseuds/feriowind/works?fandom_id=872785
and especially the Newt the Small Mother series. I believe the AO3 works contain a link to the author's tumblr which they regularly update with pieces of backstory and worldbuilding.
Re: Fanon or canon? "Pacific Rim" spoilers
Oh, it being fan art is... kinda better, actually, Pretty pictures! (-;
Is there any canon basis for the friendship between Hermann and Newt, though? I know they work together, but the summaries I read seem to talk little about what kind of relationship they have.
Actually, when we first meet them, they don't get along. AT ALL. And they spend a fair amount of the film yelling at and mocking each other. But one of the themes of the film is that, regardless of our differences, when the shit hits the fan, Humans band together and do what needs to be done. Hermann and Newt are a good example of this, and after going though some serious shit together, they appear to be on fairly good terms at the end. So there are a fair number of fics set AFTER the film that show them as friends (or more), and I think it's reasonable to assume that could happen.

Re: Fanon or canon?
If something is really gratifying to the eye, I take interest in the accompanying worldbuilding/characterization, as well (fanon often has little to do with the original work, so I need not be interested in the canon source to like fanon characterization of fanart characters). Bonus points if the work in question has tropes I am fond of (in this case, epic friendship).
