Re: Fanon or canon?

I've never seen Pacific Rim (and nor do I intend to), but recently I've stumbled across an amazing series of fanworks that seems to be largely AU (but I'm not sure) - Hermann and Newt work together on creating new kaiju who form a "hivemind" with their human creators as well as with other kaiju. They can feel each other's emotions and sort of communicate telepathically. All the kaiju are inherently kind and mean no harm to anyone, apparently because of some modification made by Newt in the process of genesis.

I'll be damned if I have any idea what's canon in this fandom anymore.

It's def. AU, but I can kinda see where it comes from. The movie does say explicitly that the kaiju have a hivemind, so that part is canon. At one point Newt... essentially mind melds with part of a kaiju brain; then later he and Hermann do it again (they're trying to find out what the kaiju are up to, and why some of their plans aren't working), so I can see how that hivemind idea could be expanded to humans. As for, "All the kaiju are inherently kind and mean no harm to anyone, apparently because of some modification made by Newt in the process of genesis." Yeah, I think if Newt tampered with them enough, that part's possible. It's not canon (we never encounter in nice/good guy kaiju in the movie), but, again, I can see what the writer got the idea.

You wouldn't happen to have a URL for these fanworks would you? They actually sound really interesting. (-:

Oh, I see. Thank you! That was very helpful. Is there any canon basis for the friendship between Hermann and Newt, though? I know they work together, but the summaries I read seem to talk little about what kind of relationship they have.

All the Pacific Rim works of feriowind (fanart+fancomics, almost no fanfiction, though there might be some inspired by their ideas):

and especially the Newt the Small Mother series. I believe the AO3 works contain a link to the author's tumblr which they regularly update with pieces of backstory and worldbuilding.

Cool, thanks for the links!
Oh, it being fan art is... kinda better, actually, Pretty pictures! (-;

Actually, when we first meet them, they don't get along. AT ALL. And they spend a fair amount of the film yelling at and mocking each other. But one of the themes of the film is that, regardless of our differences, when the shit hits the fan, Humans band together and do what needs to be done. Hermann and Newt are a good example of this, and after going though some serious shit together, they appear to be on fairly good terms at the end. So there are a fair number of fics set AFTER the film that show them as friends (or more), and I think it's reasonable to assume that could happen.

People like you honestly confuse me. Why are you so interested in a fanon of something you never want to see? Why would you even go looking for it?

Normally I have little interest in other fandoms' fanon, but this applies only as long as we're talking about fanfiction. Fanart? I don't care what fandom it's from. I just browse the fanart tag on AO3 and look at everything that's posted - the rating, the category, the kinks, and the fandom are of no importance.

If something is really gratifying to the eye, I take interest in the accompanying worldbuilding/characterization, as well (fanon often has little to do with the original work, so I need not be interested in the canon source to like fanon characterization of fanart characters). Bonus points if the work in question has tropes I am fond of (in this case, epic friendship).
