I did a similar thing. I was homophobic up until I began reading Harry Potter slash when I was 17. My homophobia didn't have a religious foundation (at least, I had begun to reject religion at that time anyway), it was cultural and simply not an issue I'd really thought about until then. So pretty soon I actually loaned my best friend some printed slash fanfic and her opinion on gay issues soon changed too.

I don't blame you for nudging your friend toward fandom. I don't know if it will help change her mind, but that might be nice if it did.
