3 meals a day, 8 days straight I have sampled Chinese cuisine. Not one repeat dish. I can confirm:

1. American Chinese food has taken from this style of cuisine everything worth taking
2. It is not a mystery why people who grow up in China are like 5 foot nothing
3. If I eat one more meal here I may die
4. Monoculture = worstculture

I disagree.

More or less strongly depending on what you mean by "American Chinese food".

$5 says they basically only ate chinese takeaways and fast food. Cause 8 days is not enough time to really sample an ENTIRE CULTURES food

IDK I think if I sent a Chinese person 24 different flavors of Lean Cuisines and Hungry Mans they could totally pass judgement on everything America has to offer the culinary world !

What does a profesional food critic know about food?

This entire article is SO on-point I cannot even. This made me laugh out loud:

Our only expensive meal was in Beijing, where we went alone to a fancy restaurant recommended by an acquaintance. The place was located in an old warehouse and had been lavishly decorated. There was a wine expert and someone whose job it was to drop by every three minutes and refill your water glass. We had the Peking duck, which was expertly carved rather than hacked and was served with little pancakes. Towards the end of the meal, I stepped into the men's room to pee and there, disintegrating in the western-style toilet, was an unflushed turd, a little reminder saying, "See, you're still in China!"

And while I will never accept a sample size of... one, out of curiosity, where were you eating these meals?

I also didn't realize there was any question height being related to genetics isn't a mystery, thanks for settling that anyway?

Restaurants? Was there a variety? Did you research reviews for the restaurant before trying them, ask the waitstaff for recommendations?

Yes, in the last place they suggested duck soup. It's ALL BONES. Like they stripped most of the meat off the duck, took a sharp chef's knife, and DICED THE CARCASS INTO A PILE OF SPLINTERED, RAZOR SHARP BONES WITH ONLY A TINY SCRAP OF MEAT ON EACH.

I ask like, these are just for flavor right? They cook them in the broth and the marrow comes out and seasons... no. No this is the meat you are expected to eat. You are expected to eat it and it's a delicacy, much better than western cooking.

So I'm eating this tough, leathery boiled meat wrapped in razor blades. It takes forever, I get about 1oz of meat. I look around, self-concious. I am spitting out bone fragments, getting nowhere. These native Chinese people with me must have some system that makes it easier. No. They do not. They are eating it the exact same way, spitting the bone shards, moving at the same pace.

They turn to me: "Good right much better than a pee-zah". (the only western foods they know are pizza and hamburger)

I smile and nod vigorously. Spit out a few more bone shards.

Okay, sorry you had a bad experience but there are more than 20 provinces in China (Beijing is in a municipality which I'm not sure if it is separate from a province or inside a province?) in China and you come off as a little ridiculous saying they have nothing to offer and everyone in China is short because their food is awful or because it lacks nutritional value or whatever you were implying.

I'm not the biggest fan of duck soup either but I've definitely enjoyed many meals and recipes my Chinese friend's family has shared with me that aren't typically found in American Chinese restaurants.

Really all you can say is you don't like Chinese food. Which is fine, just don't, like, confuse your opinion for fact.

Hee! I LOL'd at your description - not my kind of soup either, from the sounds of it. Hope you have better luck with the next meal.

Okay, that is definitely something I've noticed as well and completely fail to understand. But while I may not understand the bizarre fascination with super-bony meat, Chinese food is still pretty awesome in general.

TWO THINGS

1. Do you realize this guy is mostly quoting David Sedaris, right?

2. There's a guy in my department from Shanghai who claims Beijing is basically the redneck (his word) capital of China; that it isn't at all sophisticated there. I damn sure wouldn't know. However: the food in BEIJING very well might fucking suck. That doesn't mean all chinese food sucks. There are a hell of a lot of cuisines in China. It's like someone trying barbeque in Kansas City, not liking it, and deciding they hate all barbeque while forgetting Memphis and Texas exist.

But seriously a lot of this food sounds really awful.

Well, they didn't have growing problems with obesity in children until McDonaldization started going rampant over there.
