Yeah, that picture of Snape is pretty much just Mary GrandPré's mental vision, right?

I don't think book Snape and movie Snape look all that different, actually, except that book Snape has a beard, which the text of the book doesn't mention anyway. I don't get the "OMG why's he playing Snape" people. Then again, Harry Potter fans will wank about anything.

Point. But yeah, I'm not sure whether or not I'm happy he's playing Snape. On the one hand, it's Alan Rickman, and I love him no matter what, but on the other hand it means I have to pay for watching those movies :(

Exactly, it's just her idea based on the text, and then whatever ideas marketing/art director/etc etc made her work in.

I heard Mary GrandPré's speak a few years ago, and even though it was supposed to just be about her career in general, she WENT OFF about working on those books - it was kind of uncomfortable and weird to hear - so bow I have a hard time getting into her interpretations of the characters anyhow.

Not only that, but MILLIONS of HP readers don't even know that picture. It's only in the American version. (Most) European versions (including the British one) don't even have illustrations besides the cover art.
