I like it but I can see how some people wouldn't. His voice is like a cross between Alan Rickman and a creeky door. If you don't that guttural crackle and prefer something softer and smoother like Hiddleston's, I can see how Cumberbatch's voice would grate on your nerves.

Eh, I get you, liking a voice is a very, very subjective thing. I cringe at a lot of voices that other people love. It's also a matter of exposure - some voices (like his) I liked at the beginning and the more I listened to it, the more it started to annoy me and other people's voices started to grow on me after a while.

It also once almost destroyed a character for me: I only knew a movie in the dubbed version and loved a character - then I watched the original version and his voice was so annoying I wasn't so sure I liked him anymore X'D

I like his normal, everyday voice. But when he tries to get it extra deep and ~mysterious~, like in Star Trek or, apparently, The Hobbit, I find it kind of grating.

Same. I heard his voice in the new Hobbit trailer and was like 'wtf?'

That's not how I thought Smaug would sound....at all.

Y'know, I don't actually mind him.

But I will admit; while I was watching 12 Years a Slave, it really threw me off to hear him attempt a Georgia accent. I had to tell myself it was in reverse; that his character was a pompous dick attempting a British accent. It makes no sense, but...oh well.
