Okay, you have me at decent female lead shows but there are plenty of shows where women are the lead characters. Shows such as Lost Girls, American Horror Story, Once Upon a Time, Scandal, Revenge, Pretty Little Liars and Girls just to name a few.

Not to mention that a lot of modern cartoons are also good at female representation.
(Korra don't count)

why doesn't Korra count? because of bad female representation or it doesn't count as a modern cartoon for some reason or?

The show has really bad characterisation problems, the love shape for one.

Love shape. I am using that.

The quality of a show doesn't have anything to do with the quality of its representation. If a shitty popular show has a female lead and lots of female characters, it's as good for female representation as a shitty popular show with a male lead and lots of male characters is for male representation.

i guess you're right. It's still shit though.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Korra is shit, though it's sadly falling short of its potential (mainly because of the, as you so succinctly put it, love shape, imo).

A+ for "love shape"

Lost Girls, ugh I love that weird show. How did I forget it? And I know there are others I'm just blanking at the moment.

I am completely unfamiliar with American Horror Story, Scandal, Revenge, and only have a passing idea about Pretty Little Liars and Girls. I am apparently woefully out of the loop.

Rizzoli & Isles! I knew I was forgetting one of my favorites.

American Horror Story has great female characters! So many and so varied, I love it.

Scandal is excellent! You should definitely give it a try!

OUAT in Wonderland too. Well, maybe. Alice is definitely the lead but having Will as a co-leed and having a male/female evil team might disqualify.

[spoilers: with him in stone Alice and RQ might be the main focus for a while too]

It is cool that for once it's the male love interest that's imprisoned and the female love interest gets to be the one to go on a quest to save them.

I don't immediately adore Wonderland the way I love OUAT, but I really do like that Alice is the one going to go on a quest to save Cyrus and not the other way around.

Also you know...Alice didn't entirely need saving from the asylum. I mean, yeah...she needed help to get out, but she mostly needed a reason to. Since she did far more asskicking once the Knave told her Cyrus was still alive than he did the whole time. :)

I think Wonderland has its issues and there are things about it that bug me but I do like it, particularly as we learn more about the characters.

Castle, Sleepy Hollow, and Game of Thrones all have female lead characters. Both Castle and GoT have large fandoms, and Sleepy Hollow is young but popular.

I loved the lead woman in OUAT so much, but the writing was just so painfully execrable I couldn't keep watching.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Is Lost Girls any good? I just did a quick google and the main characters being a succubus is a bit... :/ for me. Tentatively eyeing it, could do with a new female lead show to watch

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So a female lead can't be sexual without you side-eying it? Fuck off.
