Re: Words you always mispronounce

My mother is deaf, she spent years of her childhood with a speech therapist so most people don't have difficulty understanding her, usually they think she has a French accent (weirdly after I explain she's deaf all of a sudden they can't understand her anymore :/) but there are still some words she just never quite got the hang of or just straight up prefers her pronunciation (she hates "Brock-lee", favoring the fancier "bra-call-e"). So there are a couple of words I picked up from her that I had to adjust my pronunciation of after I heard other people say it but I never stopped pronouncing anyway as "en-away".

This probably doesn't count as a mispronunciation, probably the opposite, but I pronounce mature how it is spelled instead of the "ma-chure" my Texas twang usually employs. The first time I heard it out loud was on Stargate (referring to a goa'uld symbiote) by a Canadian actor. However I do pronounce immature as "immachure"

I...don't know how else to say it. Unless she's really exaggerating it, like 'bra-CALL-e' or something....?

That is how she says it. How did you think I was saying she says it?

Like, "Bra-cuh-lee"?

No, but when i say it, the emphasis is on the first syllable, rather than the middle one. Same sound, different emphasis. :)

haha actually people who say "ma-toor" drive me nuts. xD Maybe it's a regional thing, because almost everyone I know says "ma-chure".

I feel like "brock-lee" and "brock-o-lee" sound almost the same because of how fast you say it, but it also annoys me when people leave the "a" out of caramel. not sure if I like what that says about me lol

I've never heard anyone say it "brock-o-lee".

Oh and did you know sherbert is just a really common mispronunciation? It's supposed to be sherbet.

I have always heard broccoli pronounced with three syllables. It would not have occurred to me to pronounce it otherwise.

Huh. According to youtube if my mother said it "bra-cO-lee" instead of 'bra-cALL-e she'd be right. Which is closer than how everyone I know says it.
