I don't watch a lot of television, but if you're looking for media in general with awesome female protagonists I can rec some comics & manga, if you want?

I wouldn't mind some manga recs. I'm not really into comics but if there are any that seem interesting I might check them out.

AYRT

Here's my standard rec list, with annotations. There might be a few things I forgot to add because it is late here and I am tired.

Manga:
- Sailor Moon (Just in case you're one of the few people that haven't already read this: It totally lives up to the hype.)
- Codename: Sailor V (Prequel to Sailor Moon. It's pure fun.)
- Magic Knight Rayearth (Magical girls + giant mecha = awesomeness.)
- Battle Angel Alita (Stuffed full of sci-fi clichés, but if you like that sort of thing it's a dream come true. Also, cyborgs!)
- Appleseed (Another one with sci-fi clichés galore. And more cyborgs! Main characters are a cop and her cyborg boyfriend, who is also a cop.)
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (I'm probably committing heresy by saying this, but I think the manga is better than the film adaptation.)
- Double Arts (One thing I love about this is how for a moment it LOOKS like it's setting up a love triangle with the major characters, but then that doesn't happen. So then you get two girls who are NOT competing with each other over the main guy! Sadly, the manga was cancelled prematurely before it had a chance to go anywhere interesting. You can read the whole thing here: http://mangafox.me/manga/double_arts/)
- xxxHolic (OK, the protagonist is male, but if you ask me Yuko is what makes it worth reading. She's an awesome character even if she isn't THE MAIN CHARACTER strictly speaking. She's very important to the story, though.)

Not Manga:
- Courtney Crumrin (Don't read this one before going to bed – it's creepy. Courtney is interesting because she falls into a lot of tropes usually reserved for male characters – for one thing, she's a broody loner type. And there are fairies!)
- Captain Marvel (There have been a LOT of comics featuring Carol Danvers, but don't worry about those; the current Captain Marvel series tells you pretty much everything you need to know about her and is not a confusing continuity-snarl mess in the way that superhero comics often are.)
- Runaways (The line-up changes frequently throughout the comic, but the male-female ratio consistently skews toward female. Might require some knowledge of the Marvel universe to get all the references, but it's a standalone thing and you don't have to read any other Marvel comics to understand the plot for the most part. I feel like I should warn you though, the quality of the writing starts to drop over the last few arcs and a few issues have terrible art.)
- Nextwave (Three of the five main characters are female. HIGHLY recommended, because it's fucking hilarious. Again, you might not get all the jokes if you don't have basic knowledge of the Marvel universe, but otherwise I think it stands pretty well by itself.)
- Batwoman (Badass, interesting protagonist + gorgeous art = excellent comic. Start with Batwoman: Elegy, and if you like that, try her ongoing series.)

My Favourite Comic Ever
- Gunnerkrigg Court (I honestly can't think of any way to describe this that would do it justice. It's really, really good. http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/)

Can I leave you a rec for you for Polly and the Pirates? (Assuming you haven't come across it.) Like, I don't even know if it can be found, but ZOMG I love it and it's in the same vain as a number of your non-manga rec list.

Different anon but here's some manga recs (and I second the recs for Sailor Moon and Nausicaä) :

Finished stories :

-Azumanga Daioh (4 volumes) : funny gag comic about a bunch of high school girls

-Basara (27 volumes) : the epic tale in a post-apocalyptic Japan of a girl crossdressing as her deceased brother to fullfill a prophety and free her country from a tyrannic monarchy.

-Coelacanth (2 volumes) : it's been a while since I read it and I don't remember much other than the fact that it's about a murder mystery and I really liked the main character.

-Doll Star (2 volumes) : a girl with a special power who get involved in the secrets of the people around her.

-Et Cetera (9 volumes) : the story of a chinese girl in the Far West and her mysterious magic gun inherited from her strange grandfather.

Currently being published :

-Bride Stories/Otoyomegatari : stories of young brides, in the XIX° century, in the middle-east. The art is gorgeous.

-Chihayafuru : when she's in middle school, Chihaya who isn't really talented in anything discovers the japanese card game "karuta". Because the game is very obscure outside of Japan, the best japanese player is the best in the world. Learning that she has potential, she wants to try to see if she can go to the top.

-Teppu : a sports manga about Mixed Martial Arts for women. Something really interesting about it is the fact that the typical happy naïve hero and the talented cynical rival are switched around. The main character, Natsuo, is tall and very good in sports, to the point where she is totally bored with everything. Her encounter with a higschool girl her age who is into MMA will get her into it.

Black Lagoon - be warned, it is not so much a positive portray of female characters but rather everyone-are-believable-bastards series. The women tend to be more brutal while the men tend to be more calculating; but believe me when I say they all have their problems. Which is exactly why I love it.

Balalaika is fucking awesome. I love her so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
I love all of them. They are seriously all bad ass in their own way. Like the forger Jane, her first arc made her one of the very few loser-clowns but holy shit her second arc. Just. Castful of badasses with about 6:4 women to men ratio.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
I love all of them too, but Balalaika will forever be my favorite. Is the mamga still on hiatus?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-14 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Random fact: I love most of them, with the only character who bores me being Roberta. Reason: She's too overpowered. So kick ass ladies in that show for sure.

As far as I know it's still on hiatus. :(
