I did not realize how crazy my dad is in general until I got to middle school. It was only after I became socialized with normals that I became aware of the fact that he is a racist, homophobic, alcoholic control-freak. Especially since he is so convinced that he is extremely progressive on certain issues regarding race and orientation.

Now it's almost funny, because I can immediately tell when he is about to get unspeakably offensive, since he always starts using "the" adjectives: "the blacks", "the gays", etc. It's like a 5-second warning that things are about to get super uncomfortable for everyone in the room.
