Honest question: does Hannibal the show have that much gay? I only like to watch things with gay tension (I wish I were kidding). Is it actually homoerotic even remotely without wearing a thick pair of yaoi goggles? have writers suggested they might be gay? etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
the writers have said that they aren't ever going to be sexually involved but that they are "in love" in a non-sexual way. Their chemistry is intense though.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
aw so word of god says they are definitely not sexually interested? or just, it's not going to appear on the show? meh intense non-sexy-romance is okay, I guess

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
The creator has said that it wasn't intentional, but he also doesn't mind if people interpret them as gay.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
what did they say?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
mads on the subject:
"Even though I'm the puppeteer, Hannibal really, really loves Will." http://www.etonline.com/tv/131976_Mads_Mikkelsen_Hannibal_Interview/

"So, yes, Hannibal loves him, and he will go far to help him" http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/04/04/hannibal-mads-mikkelsen/

"There is definitely some sort of love [but] what kind of love, I'm not sure" http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/s225/hannibal/news/a507426/mads-mikkelsen-on-hannibal-bromance-its-definitely-love.html

Bryan Fuller:

""Love between two characters doesn't have to be sexual but it can still be love. And I think there's definitely a form of love that Will has for Hannibal." http://www.indiewire.com/article/comic-con-hannibal-creator-and-cast-on-the-shows-homoeroticism-and-season-two

I thought it was just that Hannibal was "in love" with Will (as much as he can be), not that Will was also in love with Hannibal. At least from what I remember seeing, especially Hugh Dancy's comments. Did I miss something?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Mads Mikkelsen has said he is playing Hannibal as a man who is both "in love" with Will and "really, really attracted" to him. Make of that what you will.

Oh, I understood that part, from Mads/Hannibal's side. I was saying that I didn't see it from Will/Hugh's side.

LBR fangirls will ship any two male characters who are together in any close proximity even if they're related to one another.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well... yes. But there are lots of series/shows out there where there's enough to go on. My thing is, if one character were the opposite gender and the relationship would easily be interpreted as potentially romantic, then the same-gender relationship can be treated the same. And let's be real, lots of two-dude relationships are pretty gay without being canon gay.

i seriously doubt it would. it's way too graphically abusive.

lecter as written in the book series was "gentler" to clarice starling (their relationship did take a sexual turn) than he's been to graham on the tv show.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think Hannibal wanted to "shape" both of them to his liking but with Clarice it was effectively helping her overcome her feelings about her father whereas with Will in the show it's more "let's break him down as much as possible".

There is definitely tension between the two leads, but given all that Hannibal puts Will through, it really can never be a functional relationship, in my opinion. So I suppose it depends on how manipulative and twisted you like relationships to be?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it's not about healthy, functional relationships or future husbands! at all. It's literally just about the passion/tension/obsession/emotion, because that's what's interesting to me and gets my imagination going. I like the exciting, sexual elements, so they can be (almost) as twisted and unhealthy as possible as long as something is there.

There is definitely tension and obsession and emotion. But as someone says above, Hannibal really fucks Will over in several ways throughout the season. I see it more as Hannibal is really, really obsessed with Will and there is a lot of tension from that, but I just can't see any kind of relationship developing, given all that Hannibal does. So, it might be interesting to you?

You get that, and some intense face touching to boot. :)

Hannibal is a psychopath, though. Even if he does love Will, as word of god suggests (see quotes above), it's in a way that hardly deserves the word 'love'. Obsession, co-dependence, emotional manipulation etc in abundance, basically.

I love it.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
You'll probably love it, then! The characters and their relationship are way more complicated than a lot of fanon makes them out to be, and what happens in the finale isn't actually Hannibal's end goal. The therapy setting gives their interactions this amazing intimacy and intensity from very early on, and Hannibal genuinely does love Will even as he causes him great harm in the process of trying to unleash what he sees as Will's potential, which can be hard to reconcile or to watch but is definitely there. Some things he does are pretty much marriage proposals in serial killer world, haha. There's a scene between them around the middle of the season that the AV Club said was way more romantic than the onscreen kiss with a canon romantic interest earlier in the episode. I shipped the canon at first but had to agree with that assessment later. The showrunner is gay himself and extremely friendly to slashers and fandom, so while he's promising us full sex or anything like that, he's not bothered by or dismissive of the idea at all. He retweets slashy fanart and replied "ikr" when he was tweeting about filming a sexy kiss between sexy characters who weren't Will and Hannibal and someone asked why not.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
He ISN'T promising us full sex. Pardon my Freudian slip there hahahaha

Not all that much gay imo, but the chemistry between them (and every actor in every combination imo) is pretty awesome. With Will and Hannibal, it's to the point where people watching the show were still shocked when Hannibal, obviously harms Will only with extra obviousness about it.

Also, Hannibal's actor doesn't just eye fuck, he eye salivates, and ends up looking like he's about to jump everyone.
