I'm just surprised that you remember something from such a young age! Wow, great memory!!!!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Is this really so exceptional (remembering stuff from a young age)?

I'm just curious because I remember even my first day at kindergarten (I was three). I thought that was normal?

3 is pretty young to start kindergarten. Around here kids are 5 or 6 when they start.

As for the topic, I don't think it's that odd. I remember bits and bobs from about 2 or 3-ish and up.

3 is the normal age to start kindergarten here. School starts then with 6.

Thought that too! (so I was curious when the anon above mentioned the good memory)

Ah, maybe our areas have different definitions for what kindergarten are. For my school "kingergarten" is the first year of school. Interesting.

Probably not different areas but different countries. :)
Here in Germany you can (of course you don't have to) go to kindergarten (our German word got adopted! :)) from around age 3-6 until you start school. There is even something like pre-kindergarten for younger children (but this is not available everywhere - at least not so often in the rural areas)

US here and we have pre-K that covers your kindergarten range and for whatever reason kindergarten itself is just the one year right before 1st grade, everything before is pre-K or sometimes "day school". I'm not sure if it's legally mandated but I've never met anyone who didn't go to kindergarten!

"Kindergarten" in Germany is what we used to call nursery or preschool when I was growing up in the US.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Nooo, 3-4 is the normal age here, 4-5 is prep, 5-6 official school.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Where I live kindergarten is the first year of "official school". 3-4 year olds is more pre-school age, if any schooling at all.

My mom died when I was 2, and I can remember stuff about her and before she died, as well as stuff directly after. I always assumed it was the traumatic event that made it possible for me to remember stuff back then... sort of gave me a "reference point" I guess. Interesting that it can be so different with different people though.

DA

It really depends on the person, I think. I have really clear memories of things that happened when I was two and three, but then I have a couple friends who struggle to remember anything that happened before they were seven or so.

I think it varies a lot. I remember a few very clear scenes from 2 and 3, and a few not as clear.

Studies show that 18 year olds like the secret maker remember a lot of things that they forget by the time they're 25.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC, a person can start remembering from as early as 2 years old. I can't back that claim up, but I remember reading it somewhere. I don't think our long-term memory is fully functional until after 2 years old or something like that so it's not too surprising that someone would remember something from when they were four (especially since it's tied to such strong emotions).

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
that is fascinating, thanks!

All my (first-second year) psych classes said right now they think memories start holding when you start speaking, which is around 2 y/o.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've learned in Cognitive Science, we're actually not entirely sure what causes the memory loss of earlier years. The memory system appears to be functional before, we think it might be due to reorganizing once children learn to use language to express themselves. Most people cannot remember much before they were around four years old I think.

Emotional events are generally remembered much better, so maybe it is also easier to remember events that are highly emotional, even if you were much younger at the time?

Wow, that makes me wonder what's up with my brain that I don't really have anything but one or two memories from before I was like, twelve.
