Are they negative? Is it all "birth family is the only real family" bullshit?

No, although the main premise of the movie is that he wants to find his birth mother (so he tries to build a machine that can see his memories from when he was a baby). But it's very adoption-positive.

OP, why not talk to him about it? While he may be able to relate to the film, I think it would help reinforce the idea that families don't have to be blood-related and there's nothing wrong with being adopted.

It's a positive portrayal and I think it's weird of OP to be this worried.
