People self rec in conversations as far as I know. Someone will be talking about trying to find a specific type of fic and the person normally goes, "Weeellll, technically I know where you can find it but it's mine. Is that okay?" And then they rec it.

Sometimes people just go, "Oh, I wrote that. Here."

Conversation is the only time I've come across it. Seems benign to me.

Yeah, I see it in fic finder comms/conversations but I can't think of anywhere else. When it's a recommendation based on content rather than quality that can be pretty modest.
