I loved Catherine when she was a kick-ass Navy officer. Now she's basically...Steve's girlfriend who runs around in a bikini top and cut-offs and occasionally does 'Navy stuff' when it can help him solve a case. Or goes 'undercover' as a roller-derby woman or whatever....

Yeesh. It's like she's not even *in* the Navy anymore, the way she's...never. On. The. Ship.

And damnit, I want Kono back, she's the best of any of them.

OP here: Well, one of the reasons I've liked Catherine more is that they fleshed out her character. She actually has left the Navy - she went to work with an ex who owned a private security firm. So there were 2-3 episodes where a big element was her character msking that decision. Of course, her ex was killed an episode or so later - but even after that a focus has stil remained on Catherine and her career choices and emotional journey.

That's good. I haven't watched lately because i was getting so frustrated with her being *not* in the Navy - i loved that she was career military and still interesting! - and the whole 'Steve's mom' story. I really don't like that story *at all*.

DA

Catherine's not in the Navy anymore. Or haven't you seen the last few episodes? And Kono will be back. I don't think her absence was a decision by the writers. Grace Park just apparently needed the time off for some reason (the popular rumor is maternity leave but as far as I know that's never been officially confirmed). I read somewhere that a lot of the scenes this season with Kono and Adam in the jungle were apparently filmed immediately post-S3 finale, and the recent ones with her in Hong Kong were apparently filmed in Vancouver where Grace lives. Whatever's going on with her, the writers are apparently going out of their way to work with her and still weave her into the show as best they can until she can come back.

No, i haven't. Her Navy career was awesome, and when they seemed to just forget about it and she apparently went on permanent leave or something just to help Steve, it really bugged me. Plus the whole 'Steve's mom' plot irritates the fuck out of me.

Huh, I wonder what's up with Ms Park. I hope she's not ill. Kono is the best of core four and seeing her leave the show (for who knew how long) was a huge bummer.

Agreed about Steve's mom. That whole thing has just dragged the show down. At least they've debunked the "Steve and Wo Fat are brothers" theory.

I don't think Catherine took leave to help Steve. I think she was already on leave/vacation - something like that between deployments or something like that. It very likely doesn't work that way in RL, considering this show plays fast and loose with the rules on just about everything (and I'm not military so I wouldn't have the slightest clue) but I think that's how it was explained in the show, because there was one episode where she was relaxing by the pool, and Steve called her, and she complained a little bit about using up her leave helping him. Besides, after they added her as a regular, they needed to find a reason to have her involved, so, thus the leave.

As far as why they added her as a regular, my theory is that somewhere in S1 there was a decision to add another female character to the main cast, and that preferably she would be a love interest for Steve. I don't know whether that was a network edict or a writer decision, but it has become very obvious that they were determined to add another woman to the cast, and no amount of complaining from the fans was going to change that. They tried with Jenna, and that didn't work. They tried with Lori and that was even worse. So rather than try again with a third unknown, they fell back on Catherine, who was already known to the audience, and mostly liked, at least until she was made a regular.

Personally, I like Catherine, and since Grace Park has had to be out for a while for whatever reasons, it's been nice that it hasn't just been the all-boys club. How they will work things out when Kono returns is the question. One of the issues with Lori was how Kono got pushed out of places she should have been (like the chopper in North Korea) to make room for Lori. Hopefully they'll do better this time around letting them both be part of the action.

This, exactly. I despised Lori and how she was shoehorned in. I thought having Cathrine as Steve's love-interest and just showing up from time to time was a)realistic (she's a navy officer!!!) and b) worked well with the established characters. I think Cathrine was/is awesome - i just wish they hadn't decided to take her out of the Navy, a career she obviously enjoyed and was proud of. Meh.

Why there always has to be a *ROMANCE* is so baffling. Sure, it's fun when the pair in question have chemistry and are well-written, but when it's some kind of edict from on high and they just try to ram somebody in there.....

Somebody like Steve in real life? Would probably die alone. Dunno why they can't do *that* sometimes.
