I think comics have sort of the same thing going that tabletop roleplaying games have going.

Roleplaying games are the extreme case, focused around a single game. If you say that you play roleplaying games, people will often ask which edition of D&D you mean. Even if you explain that you play Spirit of the Century or Don't Rest Your Head or such, people will just be baffled--you said you play roleplaying games, and to a lot of people, D&D is THE roleplaying game people play.

For comics, it's a bit more general--if you say that you like comics, people assume that you're referring to superhero comics. They often know nothing about comics that aren't superhero comics. They therefore feel confident recommending superhero comics to you--you must like them, since you must like superheroes.

(I'd imagine this is probably what would happen if you told a really dedicated Call of Duty fan that you play video games, but I only know Call of Duty fans secondhand--I've never hung out in the same social circles as them.)
