You have PERFECTLY described why I get second-hand embarrassed for people who perform "fandomness" in certain ways IRL.

"code-switching"/knowing your audience/fandom as hobby rather than lifestyle/anticipating the judgments of others (or at least understanding the connotations your behavior might have) is something that I really value, and that some people can't do and/or don't care about.
