+1 The only AUs I like are horseshoe nail AUs, which are getting harder to find.

(Okay, I will make an exception for the Zombies, Run! fandom, which has more AU fic than canon, just because I will read virtually anything thewondersmith and straydog733 write.)

I assume it's an AU that starts from one small change and spirals out from there, like the For Want of a Nail rhyme.

is a Horseshoe Nail AU where the author fixes something about canon and then writes on from there or is it the opposite? I've never heard of it!

As someone clarified above (and I probably should have; I thought it was a more common term), it's when an author makes one small change to canon and explores the bigger changes that would spiral out from there.

I like other kinds of fics that play around with canon (especially time shenanigans), but not AUs that completely transplant the characters to a different setting and make them different people. For Want of a Nail is a great trope. I also like just plain ol' What Ifs, which are almost the same thing.

Yeah, I put the "what if?s" under pretty much the same umbrella.
