Dude, I just read the fic and look at art every once in a while. I used to comment at LJ occasionally, and now leave kudos at AO3 occasionally. I really have no conception of all this angst. Is it because you want to be on the inside to read "insider" fic and view "insider" art?

Not OP, but at the level of involvement they're discussing, it's not about fanwork anymore, but the relationships between the people creating them. I know because I used to be really involved in fandom (on LJ) and had a huge friends list. Every conversation every day was about something fannish, and it was fun but that world was also extremely insular. Got to be exhausting after a few years. Now I'm less than even a casual fan and don't talk to anyone in fandom at all, just focus on my RL and observe fannish things quietly like I used to before ever entering fandom. I'm definitely happier that way.
