It's that weird thing where people will say things like, "Comics is just a format of story-telling, anybody could be into comics given the right story and characters" but then say things like, "If you like comics, you have to read X", without considering the fact that maybe X is precisely the kind of thing that somebody might not be into.

People recommended me Watchmen, which I absolutely loathed; it wasn't my thing at all. I stayed open to comics in general, though, because I've always liked comics, even if they've never been my fandom or anything, and right now I'm really digging Chew.

Well...

I kind of feel like Watchmen is kind of an exception. If you're into superhero comics at all you probably should read it even if it's not your kind of thing, because it is just so influential. So it makes sense to recommend it to pretty much anyone who's into superhero comics.

But if you're not into superhero comics I guess that logic doesn't hold up.
