My father likes to tell this story about how, when he was working in his aunt's grocery store, they got halvah in barrels of about ten pounds. And one day he took a taste, and then another and another, and by the end of the day he had disposed of almost a pound of it. It put him off halvah for years--and my father's extended family all came from Smyrna and Chios, so they loved their halvah, and he was as crazy about it as any of them before this. His aunt and uncle must have been pissed.

Honestly, how did Hansel and Gretal do it?

I think the older you get, the less you can stand to eat of really sweet stuff.

I don't know. My dad until the day he died was crazy for sweets. Like he could rival any nine year old. He could sit in front of the TV and put away a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting. But not before covering the whole thing in chocolate sauce.

Ugh. My stomach is turning thinking about that. It was so sweet.

Now it also seems sad.
