The firefly fanfic series, aptly named "Horseshoe Nail", in which River's friendship with Jayne gives her an anchor that helps her deal with things better, which chain-of-events things into a better outcome. :D

I don't know when I started liking it but it just makes so much sense. River's a telepath, and her brain's all wonkified, so there has to be so much stress from the difference between what people think and what they do...whereas with Jayne what you see is what you get. How comforting! And as for Jayne, well, he loves weapons. And River is a weapon.
