YES YES!!! You understand. I honestly don't think I've ever had more conflicting emotions for a character. It's hard to really like him because he's so cold and strange and horribly possessive. And, he raped his wife. BUT, IF YOU NOTICE, he was drunk when he raped her and he felt so guilty he never touched another drink from what we see. When everyone is drinking champagne, he is drinking tea.

It kills me when he is curled up on the couch in a depressive funk and his mother says he loves too deeply because it's obvious he wants to be loved so badly but he's just so awkward. I just... ugh. So many feelings about Soames.

I never noticed that about his drinking! I would watch the series again but I don't want to have go through the wringer like that.

because it's obvious he wants to be loved so badly but he's just so awkward.

That's just it. We can tell there's this badly wounded creature underneath all that stiffness and we want that shell to crack open so the real Soames can come out.....and when he does, he comes out like THAT and it's horrifying and he continually fucks things up with his utter lack of human understanding and empathy. So you don't know WHAT to feel.

Honestly, he reminded me of my dad in a weird way (except for the whole rape part, yikes) -- when I was growing up my dad was very emotionally distant and repressed, although I could tell there was some real feeling underneath the cold exterior. So I was naturally inclined to sympathize with Soames, but he makes it so very hard to sympathize with him...

Damian Lewis being flawless didn't help matters.

Just to butt in. I think it's Damien Lewis that makes the character really work. He comes across as an unreconstructed Victorian man. I think he is horrible and IRL should be in prison. Certainly not a man to stay with but I do agree that there's something really clever in presenting a character like that in a way that you can have mixed feelings for him.

Anyhow she got Rupert Graves, much better deal!
