Ancient African =/= black? Or at least not the definition of "black" that we use today?

I thought

I'm confused... both on what you think Ancient Africans looked like and what you mean by definition of black that we use today?

I thought "black" was more a cultural term than a physical descriptor. I could be wrong, though, I'm not an expert. ;-;

I don't know anything about that. I don't think I've ever heard it used that way except in a derogatory way? When I say someone is black I just mean their skin tone. I could be wrong though...

*on second thought I realize that in America there is definitely a sense of black culture and community but I've always gotten a sense it's mostly a response to exclusion and an expression of solidarity and not limited to a particular subset of black people. Like both the Jamaican, Nigerian, and Ethiopian neighborhoods here identify as black as do African-Americans. I've definitely witnessed accusations of someone "acting white" but I have never heard of someone not being black because of cultural reasons and not genetic ones.

But the mutation that accounts for Caucasian skin tones only showed up around 50,000 years ago (the same time humans began migrating out of Africa) so while people with black skin tones are about as genetically related to our ancestors as anyone else their skin tones would share more resemblance. As far as I understand it anyway.

Well, African tribes are very genetically diverse. Since Africans have been evolving the longest, I'd say there would be a difference between African American people and say, all the tribes in Africa.

I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I just meant it was my understanding that 'black' referred to a specific range of skin tones regardless of where the trait was inherited (like blonde or brown-eyed) and while it can have an implied cultural context esp. in America it wasn't limited to it. If that makes sense?

That was me, anonymouslyyours. I replied before logging in and finishing with also questioning my understanding of 'white'i.e. a catchall term for many ethnicities that share a trait of a skin tone range but also having cultural implications esp. in America.

Yeah, I guess you're right. And I suppose early humans might have had super dark skin, but I don't know if it started that way with hominins or kept gradually getting darker as an adaptation, as people lost fur, but you're right, the Caucasian skin as we think of it now didn't come about at all until later.

I think, looking back and reading it again, what made me say what I said in response to that first comment was the comment that people had "some" black ancestry so I assumed they meant something other than our African evolutionary origins, since if they did it would be "all" not "some". But I didn't think about it that way at the time.

It's a bit of both, especially with the ridiculous one-drop rule. Cobb would have been legally black under Jim Crow, except that he can reasonably pass. Lumping everyone together on the basis of skin color doesn't make any genetic sense. Africa has more genetic, linguistic, and cultural diversity than the rest of the planet combined.

As a side note, not too long ago, Cobb got punked by a group of Lakota grandmothers who stole a Nazi flag and displayed it as a war trophy.

Oh interesting! I had never heard or thought of a distinction like that. Hmmm. Must go read more on the topic now.

I'm not an expert, that was just my impression. It seems I may have had the wrong impression.
