There are so, so many fics that are pretty much just related to canon via character names. One of the most popular Supernatural Destiel fics is just canon names. For some fic, it's pretty easy to file off the serial numbers.

Out of curiosity, which fic are you referring to? Point Pleasant? Because that honestly didn't feel like canon characters to me at all, and I can see why it was easy to translate into an "original" work.
