Hmm, that’s not the analogy I’d go with

No, at a restaurant where the staff is there doing their jobs and I’m paying them for food and service, I wouldn’t thank them for a badly cooked meal.

However, say I was doing a secret Santa thing at work in which we were supposed to exchange baked goods and we got to put down what we might like and I asked for frosted gingerbread men. And say that the person who got my request later handed over gingerbread blobs with uneven globs of grainy frosting and when I tried the cookies, they tasted overdone and too sweet to me. I would've still thanked that person and hoped that I hadn't looked too shocked when a bunch of others raved over the cookies (because, of course, the object of that kind of exchange was to share).
